Medical-grade products are able to contain higher concentrations of active ingredients because they are being dispensed and overseen by a nurse prescriber. Over-the-counter (OTC) products can be dispensed to and by anyone so the active ingredient level must be much lower for safe use.

In order to get results from your skincare products, the treatment needs to be directed to the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis). OTC products are only treating the top layer of the skin and are not able to penetrate the surface, while medical-grade products are specially formulated to penetrate down to the dermis where collagen and elastin are formed.

Due to the higher concentrations of active ingredients in the products, your skin care program may make you red, flaky and dry, however, these are signs of good skin stimulation and will subside with continued use. Below is a timeline of what you can expect when beginning your new regimen.

Redness, dryness, exfoliation, more sensitivity, occasional “burning” or “itching”. The skin may get worse before it gets better.  You may hate this during this time frame, but hang in there.  I know what you’re going through and I’m here to help you with any questions you may have during this acclimation period. I would recommend a review following this period.

Side-effects should subside in intensity, skin may still have a flushed look, and you should notice reduced exfoliation or flaking. At this time, you should notice visible skin improvement and may start to like it again.

At this time, you should have minimal skin reaction. Keep up your products, as maintenance is required to keep results!  Now is a good time to check back in with your nurse prescriber to make any appropriate changes to your protocol.
